Dr. Matela is passionate in bridging the gap in healthcare delivery in underserved communities by working with private companies in leveraging new technologies, partnering with academic institutions in advancing innovative changes in healthcare delivery, and sharing best practices in community settings.
Dr. Matela’s informatics background include a Master of Management in Clinical Informatics from Duke University and a Certificate in Clinical Informatics from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his family practice residency at the University of Illinois-Chicago Christ Hospital. He is a board-certified physician in family medicine and a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Michael Matela has an extensive clinical experience with over 17 years as an urgent care physician. He is a staff physician at Duke Urgent Care, Duke University Medical Center. He also works at various urgent care facilities of The Everett Clinic in Washington State.
Dr. Matela is a recipient of the West Virginia University 2017 Annual Bravo! Award, Team Leader, for Excellence in Patient Care and Service. He also received an appointment as adjunct faculty at the Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in recognition of mentoring Green Beret medics in an urgent care setting.
Dr. Matela is actively exploring clinical informatics projects in the Philippines in collaboration with academic organizations and with the private sector.
